About Us

DESK believes a clear picture of effective governance makes it easier to plan actions that move it (DESK) in the direction of better governance. DESK is therefore directed and controlled by a board that has a legal, moral and fiduciary responsibility for the organization. The board’s main responsibilities include; acquiring and protecting the organization’s assets and make certain DESK is working to fulfill its mission, lives up to its value, and remain viable to the future. The Board comprises of representatives of international, local and regional deaf groups/associations, community leaders and private donors. The board meets regularly with CEO to review progress. Members of the board are listed below:

  • Mr. Oscar Mwangi (male) - Chairman of the Board.
    Prior to joining DESK, Mr. Oscar worked as an educator of the Deaf for several years. He holds a bachelor of Education (Special) from Kenyatta University, and is currently pursuing a masters degree in Special Education at the same university.
  • Jacob Ireri (male) - Founder and CEO.
    Answerable to the board, he is responsible for overall organization leadership. Mr. Ireri brings to the organization 10+ years experience in development work, project oversight, implementation and management as well as deafness and development Previously he worked with local and international DPOs/CSOs in disability sector implementing, monitoring and evaluating programmes specific to deafness and development in East Africa. He holds BA and MA in International Development at Gallaudet University, Washington DC, USA.
  • Stephen Waweru (male) - Board member of the Organization.
    Also he is Chairman of Rift Valley Deaf Association and Kenya Deaf Football Federation. He is deaf rights advocate by profession. Waweru holds a certificate in health education in Nakuru
  • JC Otero (male) - Board member / Pro-bono advisor on Social Entrepreneurship.
    Based in the Austin, Texas, USA, JC has been an advisor to DESK since before its formation through a strategic and development capacity. JC brings his extensive experience in entrepreneurship to provide DESK a different perspective in tackling the needs of hearing impaired Kenyans. .
  • Jackbed Kirua (female) - Board member.
    By profession, she is Government employee (Qualify Assurance Officer). Previously she served as the 1st chairlady of the board. She holds BED, MED (Special) and MS in Project management. Currently she’s pursing a PhD.
